Movie Review: The Mechanic
The Mechanic
Basic Premise
Arthur Bishop is a mechanic, another name for a hitman. He's decided to take on an apprentice, who just happens to be the son of a man he killed.
Review
I love Jason Statham. I'll watch any movie he's in... well for the most part. I never saw In the Name of the King, but that's another story for another time.
Let's first note that I have never seen the original 1972 version of this film starring Charles Bronson. No inclination. It is available on Netflix as a streaming video, so I may watch it eventually.
This movie put me in the mind of Transporter. It was practically the same character. That's probably why they chose Statham to play the role since he's already done it before. Though I do have to say that Arthur Bishop isn't as emotional as Frank Martin. And that's saying something.
This is a day-in-the-life-of type movie rather than guns-blazing-ass-kicking action film. There is action, and it is good. Not as much martial arts as I would like from Statham (that was a HUGE difference between this and Transporter), but still enough action that I enjoyed the movie.
For any Statham fans, I totally recommend this. For action flick fans, I would say proceed with caution because this is drama with action in it rather than action with drama in it.
Parents - Make note of the rating. It is rated R for a really good reason. There is cursing, on-screen sex, and people being killed in very, VERY graphic ways.
Previews
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon - I'm looking forward to this even without seeing an actual trailer. But I would still like to see an actual trailer.
- Unknown - This is a DVD movie for me. It looks like it would be interesting, but not interesting enough to pay theater prices.
- The Lincoln Lawyer - Funny... when I saw the title, I thought it would be more along the comedy lines, not serious drama. Huh. Who knew? Even knowing that, it is still a DVD movie.
- Fast Five - Yes! Yes! YES! I an so looking forward to this movie.
- Limitless - This looks like an interesting movie but I'm going to wait for the DVD.
- Battle: Los Angeles - This looks a little too much like Skyline to me. I never saw Skyline. I'm not sure I'm going to see this either. At least, not in theaters.
