Death of the English Language

Article in the Washington Post:

What's truly sad is that there will be some readers who don't understand why certain phrases are in quotes.

Thanks, Flash, for passing along this obituary.

You Are Getting Sleepy

I don't know why but sleepy crept up on my at work last night. I took a power/cat nap during my hour lunch that revived me a little but it's back. I usually don't get hit like this. If I sit still for too long, I start falling asleep. Looks like I'm going to bed early. There's just some minor upkeep things I have to see to first.

Movie Review: Owls of Ga'Hoole

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Basic Premise:
Soren, a young owl, must prove to the world and himself that the legends of the guardians are true. And they need to be if he hopes to save his family and all owl-kind from the coming evil.

Short:
It seems shorts before feature films are catching on again (thank you Pixar). WB gave us a short titled "Fur of Flying". Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote make an appearance in 3D. It was funny though a bit harsh. I think the writers are actually trying to kill off Wile instead of just torturing him. I actually felt sorry for the guy. One of these days, that road runner is going to get what's coming to him.

Writing Update: 24 Sept 2010

I knuckled down yesterday and spent from 7am until 3pm writing. I took a small nap somewhere in there but managed to drop 6100 words on Yolette. While that may not seem like a lot, I connected chapters eight through eleven into a cohesive whole. At this point in my writing process, I'm just writing the filler that connects the different scenes together.

Current Word Count - 92,300

Making Up for Yesterday

I'm exhausted. My lack of motivation disappeared completely today:

- Up at 6:30AM
- Stuck in morning rush hour for almost two hours going to the base
- Blood work done for a physical
- Post office to mail out books and promo
- Grocery store
- Stuck in lunch time rush hour for an hour
- Drop off groceries at home
- Off to B&N 12 miles from my house to pick up Volume 4 of St. Dragon Girl since they are the only ones who have it (got turned around on the way there and had to be re-routed 2 miles out of the way because of an accident)
- Go next door to Trader Joe's, because hey it was there
- Go to Starbuck's for the same reason
- Drive 8 miles back towards my house to Staples for mailing supplies for future promo/book mailings
- Go around the corner to Chipotle to pick up lunch
- Go home, unload car, set up my food tray and get ready to eat for the first time since 7:30pm yesterday (blood work requires fasting 8-12hrs prior)
- Eating put on pause because I found out that the 2011 RITA entry form is live as of today. So input ERIS real quick.
- Watch a few anime episodes while eating my chicken burrito bowl
- Pack up my five copies of ERIS for RITA along with three other promo packages
- Back out to go to the post office one mile up the road
- Come home and try to start the next round of mailings, but find watching anime is about all I'm good for

As I said, I'm exhausted. I fed the kitties. I cleaned the kitchen. I'm listing starboard so it's time for bed. At least I managed to get a few paragraphs of YOLETTE written while waiting my turn at the doctor's office.

Listless

Listless... there's a word. Meaning -- lacking zest or vivacity (thank you Word Web). Made up of the words 'list' and 'less'. 'List' being the archaic form of itself meaning to desire or to want to do something (thank you Wikitionary).

And of course there is the usage we are all familiar with. The noun referring to a piece of paper (typically) upon which several tasks or objects are written, usually one after the other and sometimes in a particular, so the person who wrote them can remember them.

With that meaning in mind, I am not listless. I have a very long list. I've only managed to accomplish two things from it all day and I've been up since before 7AM. However, the original meaning of the word applies.

I want to do all the things I laid out but have found myself faltering every time I try. One thing or another isn't right. Rather than work around it, I stop. Every time I try to start, something doesn't feel right and I stop again.

I know the cause and it annoys me. I usually get like this after I submit something. It's like everything locks up and has to be rebooted before I can continue functioning like normal... my version of normal.

Looks like I'll be staring at the TV for a while.

Things That Make You Go...

We are the best at what we do. All the great authors come to us to promote their works. Our services will put you in the spotlight and make you an instant bestseller. You just need to give us a few thousand dollars to talk to you about joining our team. But please, we request that you not ask about our clients. And no, we won't put their names on our website so you can contact them and ask what they thought of our services.

*****

No other agency has New York under its thumb the way we do. All the top publishers come to us for their next bestseller. Our employees combined have over a hundred years worth of experience working in this industry. No other agency can represent your masterpiece better than we can. We've sold tons and have movie deals tossed at us from every direction. In fact, here's a list of books we negotiated rights for three years ago and our current client list. Please note over fifty percent of the authors have a star next to their name. That means they are no longer with this agency.

*****

My books are taking the literary world by storm. I'm the next best thing and soon New York will realize that too. My big break is around the corner so you had better start reading my books now before you get too far behind. Simply visit my website. You should already know the address since you know my name. My site will tell you about every one of my stunning gems assuming you can wade past all of the technicolored crap and changing fonts on the home page to get to my book list. And if you do manage to circumvent the maze I created all on my own with a little help from my neighbor's ex-boyfriend though the majority of the work was done by me, then you'll see that my covers are so blurry that you can't read the titles. I didn't bother to type the titles below the pictures because you should know my covers on site, blurry or not. Also, there is no mention of which of my many publishers I graced with the presence of my books or buy links or ISBNs or any other identifiable means for you to learn more about and/or purchase this book.

******
******
******

Some of you are probably rolling your eyes at the three scenarios I presented above. Yeah, well, they are true. I've seen them.

Can someone tell me why I should trust a publicity company that doesn't bother to promote their clientele on their own website? Someone just dropped a few grand with you. I want to know that they got their money's worth.

When you see an agency that is boasting about a book deal that happened X years ago (not a bestseller mind you. Matter of fact, good luck finding it in any store, online or otherwise) and is still listing clients they no longer have, shouldn't that raise some warning bells?

Authors, when designing a website KISS (keep it simple, stupid) is a wonderful thing. Learn it. Live it. Love it. And also, while you're doing that, please learn to give as much information as possible about your books and where they can be purchased. As a reader, I have thousands of books to choose from and I'm not going on an egg hunt through your website of chaos trying to find that one little tidbit that will lead me to a buy button, if it even exists.

Oh, and though I didn't give you a scenario, review site people, you're on my list too. Review sites that don't make it readily obvious how to submit books for review and/or what the reviewers prefer to read so I don't waste time querying a genre you don't even like are high on my list of pet peeves at the moment.

Thank you for your time.

This has been a PSA provided by D. Renee Bagby and her lack of anything else better to write on her blog, so a random rant about nothing will have to suffice.

Movie Review: Easy A

Easy A

Basic Premise:
Olive Pendeghast is the typical social outcast teenager until she decides to give up her virginity... sort of. A fake roll in the hay and a lot of rumors later and she's the most infamous school in girl. That's a good thing, right?

Priorities

Priorities -- as in mine are a bit skewed.

My manga collection is cataloged and in order by title, as it should be. Actually that is wrong. First the manga is categorized by size -- trade paperback and mass market (or what I call mass market since it is a little bigger than a mass market book). From there I divided the mass markets into two groups -- adult titles and regular. Each of these three groups are on separate sets of bookshelves and alphabetized by title and then series number.

I know that sounds a little anal or OCD, but that's the way I am. My DVDs are in order by medium (anime series, anime movie, animation series, animation movie, live action series, live action movies) and then title. Yes, my husband thinks I'm a little crazy but it's the way I am.

Now this is where my priorities get a little skewed. My manga and DVDs are in order and all lined up and pretty (with the exception of the new DVDs I get every now and again. I have to incorporate those). My book collection however... some are on shelves, some are on the floor, the majority are still packed from the move in October 2009 (yes, we've been here almost a year and there are things still packed), some are down in my batcave with me, while the rest are in various rooms around the house.

I don't even know what I own since I inherited part of my collection from a friend so I don't like buying books unless they are new releases. That's the only way I can guarantee I don't already have a copy hidden somewhere.

For those people thinking I'm being paranoid or what have you, I picked up a lot of free books at RT Con Columbus, thinking they would be interesting to read. Turns out, I already own some of them. Oops. Not just one or two. I've found five repeats so far and that was from a quick skim through. Big oops. There's no telling what I'll turn up when I really start looking.

Well, not to worry. My mistake is someone else's reward. I'm giving away my repeats and books I probably won't read on my promo blog (DRB Presents 1st Chapters) starting in October. I'll put up the full list of books I've unearthed so the weekly winners can choose two. I've got a list of 107 thus far. I'd probably have more but I didn't feel like looking that hard. Also, I only needed 104 to start off this little shindig.

The list of 107 titles will appear on my blog some time before 01 October, before the weekly contests start.

Bad Me

Okay, I had a list of things I was supposed to do today. Instead of getting in my car and running around town like I planned, I got the sudden urge to clean my house and catalog books. This proves how much of a home body I am. But hey, at least my study is cleaner. That's good news. I couldn't see the floor anymore. :P

In other news, my copies of ERIS arrived today. One of the reasons I was going out was to get envelopes so I could start shipping them to their new homes. Oh well, guess I'll be mailing them tomorrow.

For those who are wondering, I've decided not to hold a contest. I'm too busy with other stuff to mess with it. However, I am offering a signed copy of ERIS in the Night Owl Reviews Halloween Scavenger Hunt.

Manga Review: La Satanica

La Satanica (Yaoi) (Yaoi Manga) La Satanica by Momoko Tenzen

Publisher: DMP June
Price: $12.95
Genre: Drama, Romance, Yaoi
Themes: High School, First Gay Love
Rating: Mature 18+
Volumes: 1 Volume
ISBN: 978-1-56970-073-0

Basic Premise:
Mashita is a strait-laced high school student with a bright future. Matsushima is a fun-loving, girl magnet with a one track mind and that track leads straight to Mashita, who doesn't even realize it. Little by little, Mashita figures out that his long time friend wants to be so much more, but is he ready for that kind of relationship?

Sex Shown:
Kissing, hugging, groping, pressed bodies, allusions to more, invisible (though slightly outlined) penises, suggestive positioning

Review:
It's Momoko-sensei!! She's another of my must-read authors and this manga is a testament as to why.

Mashita is a sadistic friend. He teases Matsushima a lot, even more after realizing that Matsushima likes him. It wasn't mean teasing so I loved his character for that.

Mastushima is the playful puppy of the pair and he is so eager to please. You feel sorry for him at times since he's a little slow on the uptake and doesn't realize that Mashita is flirt-teasing.

I love the role reversal. Mashita is a dominant personality but he's the bottom of the pair. I tend to like those stories more simply because the person who is so in control is so helpless once he's in bed. Maybe it's my mean streak coming out but that just does it for me.

They make a fun couple that was easy to read and I would have loved to have seen more about them. Not too heavy on the drama. This is a fast, light read.

TV Review: Satisfaction Season One

Satisfaction

Basic Premise:
Australian Showtime Presents a legal brothel, it's employees and the their trials and tribulations with work, social lives, families, and everything in between.

Review:
I wasn't sure what to expect with this show, but Netflix recommended it since I liked Dead Like Me and Torchwood. Go fig. For once the silly recommendation system actually works. Unlike those times back in the days when Blockbuster tried it and the system suggested I should watch Barney because I like He-Man and Friday The 13th. Then again, I can sort of see the connection. :P

If prostitution was federally legal in the United States, I hope it would look a little like 232 -- that's the name of the club. I imagine 232 is the way the brothels in Nevada are run -- health screenings, John checks, and whatever the girls need to get the job done.

Of course, the job isn't everything and no TV drama would be complete without family and close friends screwing up a good thing. Satisfaction definitely delivers on that score too. Do you hide it from your family or tell them the truth? Is your boyfriend okay with it or is he faking that he's okay? Did you just fall in love with a client? The list goes on and on.

Every possible issue is thrown at these women in a spectacular combination of drama and sex. Most enjoyable. In fact, I did the entire first season in one sitting. I only wish Showtime USA offered such this program.

It also seems to be a popular premise since there's a British show named Hotel Babylon that sounds very, very close to Satisfaction. Remake? Rip-off? Who got there first? Just remember, release dates don't tell you which writers got to it first.

My favorite characters were Heather and Lauren. I almost liked Chloe the best but she went all goat-weird and whiny mid-season. I don't think I could ever like Mel and Tippy's name just gets on my nerves. Natalie's role (minus the rubber) is probably where I would be in this situation. I liked her business side and how she got things done and made things work.

I guess, if you're like me and you enjoyed Dead Like Me and Torchwood, you'll more than likely enjoy this foray into the life of a sex worker. I'm already digging into season two.

Good To Be Home

I am home and sitting with food waiting to be eaten. I just had to do a quick post now because later won't be an option. I plan to pass out and not wake up until I feel like it.

The drive home took a little longer than I thought it would. I'm not used to traveling I-85. I also didn't know I-85 puts you off AFTER the the I-295 exit so I had to drive through Richmond rather than around it. That was a huge pain. I'll find a way around that when I do the drive again.

I plan to do a follow-up Dragon*Con post to catch all the little tidbits I forgot in my earlier posts and to put up pictures. Now it's time for rest, rest, and more rest.

Dragon*Con: Last Day

The last day and it was empty. I'd say a sixth of the people, maybe less. Hardly any costumes. Most everyone was packing up and leaving.

My brother and I only went today so we could see if there would be any sales at the dealer tables and get some stuff signed. I picked up the shirts I wanted from the get go, so I'm happy about that.

I managed to get two out of the three things I wanted. The third was only because there were no manga dealers. That surprised me greatly. There was a dealer selling anime but no manga. All of you indie store owners with a big manga inventory take note. You might want to get in on Dragon*Con next year. You'd have no competition since the book stores make no appearances.

There were TONS of corset dealers. You couldn't walk a few steps without running into another corset dealer. In one spot, there were three corset dealers side by side. I've never seen so many corset dealers in one convention. Very stiff competition.

I've got ideas for next year so far as costumes and promo are concerned. I managed to put out my promo postcards at a few locations and they were gone when I checked today. I'm taking that as a good sign. I wish I had thought to put them out on the first day. But, this was the first time and the test run. I know what to expect for next year.

Retro Movie Review: Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass

Basic Premise:
Dave Lizewski is a typical invisible teen who loves comics. He's asked the question most comic book fans have asked in the past -- why has no one ever put on a costume and gone out to fight crime? He decides to be the first, but quickly learns that the real world isn't like the comics and he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Dragon*Con: Day Three

The exhaustion is catching up to me quick. Today was a lot more laid back. I ran into Leanna Renee Hieber on the way in and chatted with her a little bit. She looked amazing in her Victorian garb, as usual. I also met C.L. Wilson in the Exhibit room.

I did two panels. The first was a CGI panel that was more technical and meant for film students so I didn't stick around. The second was a Transformers universe panel. I learned a few tidbits about the upcoming Transformers III movie. Like:
- Megan Fox isn't in it
- Looks like Optimus Prime will have his trailer (finally!)
- We might see Shockwave
- Soundwave may have a bigger part
- Due out July 2011

After the Transformers panel, the idea was to attend a Star Wars art show in the main lobby of the Marriot. Well finding the main lobby was a pain. While looking for it, my brother and I discovered the second exhibit room, which was across the way from the first. We had totally missed it the first two days.

We thought we'd do a quick look around and then head out to the Star Wars art. That didn't happen. The very first booth we saw when we walked in was a 50% off all trade paperbacks comic booth. There were no fewer than thirty long comic book boxes FULL of trade paperbacks and trade hardbacks. My brother and I spent at least an hour, if not more, going through each box. Everything was mixed so there was no other way to fin anything except to go through each box.

I spent $80 adding to my Savage Dragon collection (yes, I have started reading and enjoying Savage Dragon recently). I also got the first few trades of Dawn. I'm going to get Lisner to sign them when I go back tomorrow.

I had a shake-my-head moment. I stopped by one booth where someone was selling the shirt I was wearing. I was curious to see how much they were charging for it since I paid $7.50 for mine at Wally World. The guy looked me in the eye and said it was $22. I looked at him like he was crazy. It's sad to think that (A) some poor idiot actually paid that price, and (B) the vendor probably got his shirts from Wally World just like me.

I took a lot more pictures today than any other day. Not for any other reason than I had more energy than the first two days. Besides, I plan on stealing copies of my brother's pictures. So there was no need to do repeats.

I have officially crowned the BEST Dragon*Con 2010 costume. Without even seeing every single costume and knowing there is one day left, I have decided. I'm also biased since I LOVE this character.

Look at that and tell me that costume does not kick ass! It glows. When you take a picture with a flash, he glows. My camera is crappy, admittedly, but the pictures turned out okay. My brother's pictures came out much better.

But there you have it. The BEST costume at Dragon*Con 2010, in my opinion. I love Illidan Stormrage and this guy did the costume justice. I'm so happy I was in the Marriot when he was. I would have hated to miss this costume.

I'll upload some other pics to my FB account after I get home, but I had to share those two right now.

That was my day at Dragon*Con. One more left and that's a half day. Then it's back home again for same old, same old.

Dragon*Con: Day Two

Much better.

The parade down Peachtree was amazing. There were floats and vehicles and spectacles and it was GREAT. The funniest part -- I thought -- was when the Battlestar Galatica group/section walked past and pulled a guy dressed as Commander Adama from the crowd. That was especially funny since no in the group had thought to cosplay him.

The parade started with two guys dressed in full dragon armor. I know they were hot but they looked damn good. The parade ended with the Star Wars crowd. They are the biggest and so must bring up the rear. I did notice something though. There were lots of Starfleet officers and enlisted as well as lots of Klingons. BUT, no one else was represented. There were no borg or Romulans. There were a few Star Fleet Vulcans but that's it. No Jem'Hadar or anything like that. I would think Borg cosplay would be the biggest after Klingons and yet none were there. I found that a little odd.

The highlight of the parade was the He-Man/She-Ra group. Yup, my favorite childhood cartoon came to life -- He-man, She-ra, Sorceress, Teela, Orko, Castaspella, and Cowl were all in attendance. The woman who did Sorceress did a stellar job on her costume. I got pictures of the group after the parade was over and they were standing still. Very nice group.

After the parade, it was off to a Broad Universe quickfire reading where I found Jean Marie Ward and Diane Whiteside (among other authors). That was fun. Jean Marie did a great job with her reading. The other authors did as well, but hers was one of my favs and not just because she's a friend. Diane's book sounded intriguing and not just because it has dragons -- though that did help. :P Watching them gave me insight into the art of doing readings. I took mental notes for the future.

I spent the rest of day wandering. I collected business cards from places I plan to visit online. I am bound and determined to keep my spending to a minimum. It's working too.

Dragon*Con: Day One

3 HOURS!!!

That's how long I and several other Dragon*Con pre-registration patrons stood in line to get our badges so we could enjoy the lovely offerings of this very BIG convention spread over 4 hotels. Three looooooooong hours, one and half of which was spent in the Atlanta heat of mid-morning.

There was fun conversation to be had since I was before a film school student/teacher. We had a nice chat about movies of the summer after griping about the long line and ways Dragon*Con could improve the pre-registration situation. It seemed worth it to forego pre-registration in the future and just pay the extra $30 to get the badge that day. The line for that was infinitely shorter.

The one good thing about the line situation helped me come up with a fantastic promo idea (or two or three) that I will implement next year.

After the line and getting badges, my brother and I wandered the massive convention track. We hit the exhibit hall, the dealer's room, the comics & art room, the food court and then just wandered aimlessly before exhaustion drove us home.

The highlight of Day One was meeting NeNe Thomas. She started her career illustrating Magic cards. That's how I was introduced to her art, which is totally and utterly AMAZING. I would hunt down any and all cards so long as they had her name on them. I told her that too. I bought her calendar and plan to visit her site for more goodies to purchase with my meager means.

The second jewel of my day was meeting Ted Naifeh. He is the author of the Courtney Crumrin series. I was first introduced to his art in the Gloom Cookie series. When I saw he had a book of his own, I started reading it and fell in love. He assures me that Courtney Crumrin has another two volumes planned but there is no set release date yet. I know how that is.

I met some other comic authors as well as some amazing artists. I got business cards from all of them so I can check out more of their work.

I managed to hook up with my friend Panya whom I haven't seen in nearly ten years. I missed Jean Marie Ward, but I'll try and catch her tomorrow.

The best costumes I saw were Guyver I, Bumblee in robot mode, and an alien. The most obscure was Jem from Jem and the Holograms. The costumes are fantastic and I only regret being too tired to dig out my camera and wave people down so I could get pictures.

Tomorrow will be better since I won't be standing in line for three hours at the start of my day. As well, I know my way around -- for the most part -- so I won't be expending energy wandering around aimlessly.

This is by far and without a doubt the biggest convention I have ever attended. Dragon*Con makes Otakon look small. That's an accomplishment and a half. It really is an eclectic gathering of people from all walks of science fiction and fantasy life. I'm really enjoying it.

Dragon*Con: Making the Trip

The drive to GA was fairly smooth. Only a mild case of construction that wasn't that bad considering there was very little traffic. A lot of cops but none of them cared about me. Bonus.

Alas, Fate is laughing her ass off at me in a HUGE way. I knew it was going too well. Drive was smooth. Traffic was almost nil. Aside from my sinus migraine that made the trip with me (always fun... NOT), the trip could be classified as nice.

I packed my fun shirts with interesting sayings, my rolling bag of promo fun, and my toiletry bag. One of these bags didn't make the trip. Can you guess which one?

If you said the bag full of shirts with fun sayings (and the rest of my clothes), you'd be correct. Go ahead and laugh. *SIGH* Wally World got a few bucks richer tonight. The only good thing about it was finding reasonably priced jeans since I've been meaning to go jeans shopping.

I'm blaming this on Flash. Since she didn't make the trip, all of the bad luck that attacks her during pre-con preparations is coming after me. This won't happen next year because I'm dragging her along as a buffer.
