Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Basic Premise:
Scott Pilgrim is 22 years old, in a band that is somewhat good, and going nowhere in life fast. Ramona Flowers enters his life. He's in love at first sight. There's only one problem -- the League of Evil Ex's. He has to defeat her seven evil ex's before he can date her. It's game on with Ramona as the prize.

Review:
I got to see this movie in sneak preview on Wednesday (04 August). The hubby and I planned to pay for it, but free works too. I have to say first that I have never read the comic on which this movie is based. My hubby has and he reports that the movie stayed true.

This movie was hilarious. It takes a little bit to get used to the scene changes, which are funny in and of themselves, but the movie was totally worth the time and money. Scott is funny, the special effects are great. Any gamer geek would absolutely fall in love with this movie. My favorite character is Wallace and his string of boyfriends.

There is some realistic and some very unrealistic violence. A little sexuality, but no cursing. How they accomplished the "no cursing" is funny as hell. I'd say it's a pretty kid safe movie except for Scott getting beat up. I'd say upper-middle school age and higher, hence the PG-13 rating. For once the rating system actually hit the nail on the head.

I have one complaint. You knew there had to be one. It's the trailers for Scott Pilgrim (always the friggin' trailers and I even try to avoid them). They show you the evil ex's -- all of them. For someone like me who hasn't read the comics, that is a HUGE giveaway for a major plot point. If you can avoid the trailers, then please do so.

This is a gamer/geek culture movie. Most mundanes might find it a bit boring. People who liked Mortal Kombat (the first one) will probably like this movie.

Previews:
Sneak preview so I was surprised we got a trailer at all.

- Devil - I've already given my opinion on this but I felt the need to mention the reaction of the people in the theater. It seemed like everyone was into it and then the words "From the mind of M. Knight Shyamalan" appeared. Everyone groaned. I friggin' kid you not. I had to laugh.
